Around two years ago, a prep school in Surrey, UK, called Amesbury School, decided to completely change their uniform. Simultaneously, Boschdraai Primary School, located near Vaalwater, South Africa, had a large influx of new students as the South African government began bussing Vaalwater township children to this small farm school. Brighter Start decided to recycle the old Amesbury uniform so that Boschdraai would have enough uniform for every child. The first collection of uniform from Amesbury was delivered to Boschdraai school in October 2023.
Headmistress Tebogo and all the Boschdraai children were so grateful for Amesbury's generosity. In October 2024, the rest of the donated old Amesbury uniform was given to Boschdraai so now all 202 children have at least one set of uniform. Some Amesburians even donated school shoes, which are hugely appreciated.
Whilst delivering the uniform, the Brighter Start trustees' attention was brought to the current lack of classroom space and creche/daycare space. Although now the recycled uniform project is complete, Brighter Start's involvement with Boschdraai School is very much not. Brighter Start is beginning fund-raising for the creation of two new classrooms at Boschdraai school to end grades sharing one room and over-crowding in the school and the creche. We thank everyone who gave these kids renewed smiles when donating their uniform and implore anyone and everyone to invest in the Boschdraai children's education.
